Mrs. George J. Hegarty

Mrs. George J. Hegarty, 56, of Merrill, Iowa, a former Sioux City resident, died Friday at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City.The Rev. Nicholas Ruba, pastor, the Rev. Raymond Wieling of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Salix, Iowa and the Rev. Donald Smith of the Assumption Catholic Church, Merrill, Iowa will officiate.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.Pallbearers will be nephews Paul and Jim Fitzpatrick, Denny and Bill Ortner, Mike Ramm, and Rick Hamers.Parish Rosaries will be recited at 3 and 7 p.m.Sunday at Meyer Brother’s Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Hegarty, the former Lorene M. Ortner, was born June 15, 1920 at Danbury, Iowa.She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Danbury.On Nov. 10, 1938 she was married to Mr. Hegarty in Danbury.

Mrs. Hegarty worked in the Heelan High School cafeteria for 13 years and had lived in Sioux City for many years until moving to Merrill in November of 1975.She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church of Merrill, a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Sioux City and a member of the Altar Society of the Merrill church.

Survivors include the widower, three daughters, Mrs. Marion (Judy) Hobbs and Mrs. Jim (Pat) Abdo, both of Sioux City and Gary (Jeri) Kayl of Ponca, Nebr.; six sons Ronald, Robert, Randy and Terry, all of Sioux City, Dan of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Tom of Vermillion, S.D.; Her stepmother, Mrs. Ann Ortner of Danbury; two brothers, Wayne and Arnold Ortner of Danbury; four sisters, Mrs. Don (Bonita) Hamers of Danbury, Mrs. Joe (Marie) Grace of Beaverton, Oregon, Ms. Marita Ortner of South Sioux City and Mrs. Archie (Betty) Ramm of Mapleton, Iowa; two stepbrothers, the Rev. Raymond Wieling of Salix and Edwin Wieling of Belem, Brazil; three stepsisters, Mrs. Melvin Boysen, Mrs. Vincent Boyle and Mrs. Ed Trucke, all of Danbury and 33 grandchildren.
